On the death of Henry in January 1547, Edward, his only legitimate son became Edward VI. Sadly, Edward’s mother, Jane Seymour, died twelve days after the birth; the reasons for this are still debated. Henry proclaimed Edward as his successor in his will, but also Mary and Elizabeth and within eleven years they had all taken the throne. Initially it seems that Henry was the doting father, but he was split between having Edward at court, where he could catch any infection, or, protecting him. He chose the latter, and Edward’s days were spent being schooled and he rarely saw his father. Edward became king at the tender age of ten, but died only six years later.
