References : The sepals on the flower dictate that this is a rose rather than a carnation for which the engraved leaves would be incongruous. The seven petalled rose is an ancient symbol representing stability and natural order. The carder bee is ground dwelling, a well known metaphor for the returning soul via ‘the low road’. The closed bud adds the final element to the melodrama. We refrain from referring to this as simply ‘Jacobite’ as the cause was simply a memory when this was made rather than a just a forlorn hope or lost cause.
