In the 19th century the wares became progressivley complicated in decoration and were often decorated away from the Satsuma province. These newer designs became popular in the European market and an industry grew up for a new type of “Satsuma” ware for export. These new designs. like this example. were generally of ivory ground with elaborate imari palette decoration.
