Features and Provenance: This coin was first issued in 1741 when Maria Theresia was on the throne of Austria, Hungary and Bohemia amongst other Habsburg dominions. The thaler quickly become popular for international trade even as far as the Arab world and Africa. In 1780 Maria died and as a mark of respect the coin was dated 1780 from then on, even though the coin is still minted today; subtle differences in design allow numismatists to differentiate between issue dates and mints. The well loved global coin has become known as the MTT and was even used by the UK for trading purposes, so much so that it is one of the named coins in the Forgeries and Counterfeits Act that makes it illegal to copy it.
