Onion vases were one of the most challenging pieces to produce. and are very hard to find today. Although they were available from the glass studio on Malta itself. they tended to sell primarily from high end department stores due to their size and high price tag. Hand made by only Harris himself and the Italian brothers Vicente and Ettore Boffo who had the requisite skills to produce them.
The rarity of this example is accentuated further by the presence of Michael Harris’ diamond-point engraved signature denoting that he made this example himself. Harris did not like to sign his output with his name believing that the studio’s output and successes were the work of this team. although this is clearly a vessel the narrow neck dictates that it is a sculptural display piece. part of the true art glass that Harris sought to create.
