Features and Provenance: Born on 2 March 1316, Robert II ruled Scotland from 1371 until his death in 1390. Robert II, King of Scots, called “the Steward”, was the first monarch from The House of Stewart and the beginning of a long line of Stewart Kings and Queens that even spread to rule England. When he was in his 20’s he ruled Scotland as Regent for his much younger uncle, David II. When he finally succeeded his uncle in 1371, at the age of 54, he was an old man by medieval standards and had difficulty controlling his nobles, who were eager to renew the war with England.
