Decoration : Two veneer mosaic geometric eight-pointed ‘compass’ designs. set within a single banded keyline on the top face; walnut veneer surrounds within another single banded keyline; plain walnut veneer to four sides; original green baize to the base; inner lined with original lining paper and replacement red velvet. The mosaic veneers are lifting very slightly to their edges in places. but all are firmly in place.
Size : 14cm wide x 8.2cm deep x 5.2cm deep
Condition : Very good; no tile loss; 2 x 6mm chip to veneer on one corner. and a 15mm loss to the front. closing edge of the lid; key present; working lock
Restoration : inside base of well relined as above
Weight :  190 grams

Notes :  An early piece. predating the proliferation of Berlin Wool-work and stickwork mosaic designs; the use of single banded keylines at this period suggest (and nothing more) that the box may have come from the workshop of Humphrey Burrows at Jordan House on the corner of Church Road and Inner London Road – overlooking the Lower Cricket Ground on Tunbridge Wells Common.
