Tunbridge Ware - Miniature Cabinet With Three Internal Drawers c1870
Heading : Tunbridge Ware - Miniature Cabinet or Jewellery Box With Three Internal Drawers; Decorative Floral and Cubed Mosaics
Date : c1870
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells
Decoration : The top of this cabinet has a floral border within two pairs of keylines which has been used to form narrow curved edge panels; these surrounds a flat 'perspective cube' design on the upper surface. The opening door to the front of the cabinet has geometric border, again enclosed by two pairs of keylines, which butts up to a plain veneer panel in to which is set a floral mosaic of roses and poppies with foliage. the other three sides are plain, and the whole sits on four turned feet. Inside there are three exquisitely-made drawers, each to a different depth and with a different geometric pattern band across the front face, all three being punctuated with a small turned handle.
Size : 67mm high - 264mm wide - 99mm deep
Condition : Very good with regard to tile completeness - there are three contiguous tesserae missing from the door-border and another three or four single gaps, one of which is in the floral motif; the grain on some of the large 'cube' tiles has opened fractionally due to shrinkage; the lacquer is a little patchy to the door, and there are some gouges to the back and one side panel; edges are all even with the exception of one x 4mm nibble to one back corner; working lock with key placed to one side.
Restoration : Professionally cleaned and polished
Weight : 652g
Notes : The profile of the top surface, the use of three drawers to varying dimensions and the application of the four bun-feet are all very similar to another example of a cabinet which is labelled as having been produced by Thomas Barton.
