Tunbridge Ware - An Unusual Rectangular Pin-Hinge Lidded Glove Box c1860

Heading : Tunbridge Ware - An Unusual Rectangular Pin-Hinge Lidded Glove Box
Date : c1860
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells, England

Decoration : A lightweight rectangular box, like a 'standard' glove box, but with a flat, pin-hinged lid that has a small turned handle affixed; the lid decorated with a rococo geometric mosaic set in to a rectangular reserve with a nine-square geometric border inside banded keyline stringing; to the four sides, an indistinct and rudimentary wool-work pattern, repeated within banded keyline stringing; relined both to the inside and the base with modern paper; rosewood veneers to the body and lid
Size : 23.5 cm wide x 8.7 cm deep x 5.7 cm high
Condition : Excellent; two very small patches of lost tesserae to the lid-border which have been filled; some slight patchiness to the lacquer; otherwise sound and complete
Restoration : Relined and filled as above
Weight :  223 grams

Notes : Messrs Nye and Barton were the sole vendors of pin-hinged boxes prior to the end of the 19th century, and there's no reason to believe that this less common, rectangular, version comes from any other source; the bandings and rococo style design to the lid also both match the notional pattern books used by these two gentlemen.
