Note : the original (1903) advertising material for the cabinet lists the items contained thusly: The “Marlborough” Cabinet. No. 9066. comes in mahogany. brown oak or olive wood and contains two packs of playing cards. a pair of Foster Patent Whist Markers; four packs of Bezique Playing Cards. one pair of Club Bezique Markers in olive and ebony. with indicators; two packs of Piquet Playing Cards. one pair of Piquet Scoring Tablets; Fosters Pocket Guide to Whist and books of rules for other card games”.
Now. although Piquet and Bezique playing card sets are essentially the same thing (7.8.9.10.J.Q.K.A x four suits = 32 cards). the attached illustration shows there are actually eight wrapped packs included in the cabinet – we therefore do not have the two dedicated Piquet packs. However. all is not lost. because unlike the illustration. we have the recessed lid. which contains two ‘extra’ leather bound bridge scoring pads. complete with pencils. which would seem to be more than ample compensation !
