Decoration : A pillow-topped box with a waisted profile; to the lid – a mosaic of Battle Abbey Cloisters set within a Berlin wool-work floral border. all bounded with banded and continuous keyline stringing; plain sides; internally – a shallow lift-out tray with three compartments. one of which has a mosaic lid with a turned handle; beneath this tray. two further compartments; down one short side of the interior. two other compartments. one with a mosaic lid and turned handle. and one of which contains a glass ink bottle with a stick-ware mosaic lid; all compartments lined with the original paper; red velvet to the inside of the lid; red lining paper to the outside of the base; working lock and key.
Size : 24.9 x 18.9 x 6.6 cm
Condition : Excellent; a little ink staining and some very minor loss of lining paper internally; mosaics complete with the exception of just one or two missing tiles; thin grain-cracks to the topographic image; two areas of separation to the wool-work bands; box very sound.
Restoration : professionally cleaned and polished

Note : The form of this box – including the internal configuration – matches exactly the Penshurst Place version also listed; the same comments with regard to a possible Barton/Wise Junior provenance apply – though the slightly more extravagant lining papers are not common with any other labelled Thomas Barton material which we have come across to date.
