Description
Heading : Tunbridge Ware – Book-slide with Isometric Cube and Floral Mosaics
Date : c1870
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells; England
Decoration : End panels with 45 degree square-cut corners. one with a floral mosaic and the other with isometric cubes; the former bounded with four continuous pieces of keyl;ine stringing and the latter with two banded pieces to either side of a nine-square geometric band; there is a profusion of green tesserae throughout.
Size : 12.8 x 13.2 x 45.3 cm (fully extended)
Condition : Excellent; minimal tile loss. solid with just a small piece broken off from one of the metal hinges and a missing screw. but this is of no consequence with regard to the functionality; the lacquer over the mosaics has discoloured over time. but tiles are all easily distinguishable; there are a couple of small scuffs to the floral mosaic end face
Restoration : none apparent
Weight : 496 grams
Notes : the floral mosaic and the geometric band around the isometric cubes are both identical to other labelled pieces made by Thomas Barton; the construction and use of green tesserae are both also typical of his work
