Description
Heading : Tunbridge Ware – Two Compartment Sarcophagus-style Tea Caddy with mosaic depicting Tonbridge Castle
Date : c1870
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells
Decoration : Has a floral frieze to all four sides around the centre of the body. which sits on four turned feet and has a curving. waisted profile; the hinged lid features a geometric pattern band. again around all four sides; the lid – curving across both axes from a central origin – has a geometric frame bounded with thin striped keylines. surrounding a classic Tunbridge Ware image of Tonbridge Castle. The lids of both internal compartments have 7mm geometric bands to all four edges and small turned handles.
Size : 132mm high – 218mm wide – 117mm deep
Condition : Very good indeed with regard to tile completeness – a single patch of contiguous loss with two missing tiles. and one or two individual losses; very slight bumps and bruises to the edges. entirely commensurate with age; the main issue is on the curved surfaces – mainly the lid – where being shaped seems to have stressed both the solid veneer and the blocks of mosaic so they have split in half a dozen places to a maximum of 45mm in length; the cracks are very thin. however. and are ‘sealed’ by the original lacquer; interior smart and clean; working lock with key.
Restoration : Professionally cleaned and polished
Weight : 564g
Notes : Pieces of this style are generally attributed to Henry Hollamby – this one in particular because the internal configuration closely matches other pieces which are more readily identifiable and labelled; we have not carried out our own research to verify this to date. but will be pleased to do so if you wish to have confirmation or otherwise prior to purchase.
