A Tunbridge Ware Two Compartment Tea Caddy with Rounded lid Depicting Hever Castle c1870
Heading : Tunbridge Ware - Two Compartment Tea Caddy with Rounded lid Depicting Hever Castle
Date : c1870
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells
Decoration : Has a floral frieze to all four sides around the centre of the body; the hinged lid features a geometric 'van Gogh' pattern band with additional detailing, again around all four sides; the rounded and flat-ended lid has an oak-leaf frame bounded with thin striped keylines, surrounding a classic Tunbridge Ware image of Hever Castle. The lids of both internal compartments have 7mm geometric bands to all four edges and small turned handles.
Size : 147mm high - 256mm wide - 166mm deep
Condition : Almost perfect with regard to tile completeness - there are a few instances where the lacquer has crazed, taking on the same structure as the mosaics, and some tiny pieces have flaked off ; very slight bumps and bruises to the edges, entirely commensurate with age; one of the van Gogh band triangles seems to have split along its natural graining and been stuck back in place - but this is an old repair; interior smart and clean; working lock with key.
Restoration : Professionally cleaned and polished
Weight : 969g
Notes : Pieces of this style are generally attributed to Henry Hollamby - this one in particular because of the oak-leaf bands; we have not carried out our own research to verify this to date, but will be pleased to do so if you wish to have confirmation or otherwise prior to purchase.
