Early Tunbridge Ware Small Tray or Desk Tidy c1830
Heading : Tunbridge Ware - A Small Tray or Desk Tidy c1830
Date : 1825 -1835
Period : George IV - William IV
Origin : Tunbridge Wells; England - the Burrows family, or Edmund Nye
Decoration : Intricate geometric parquetry patterns to the canted sides and base, with an early geometric mosaic to the centre of the base; numerous strands of banded keyline stringing, with the central pattern being set in a golden satinwood reserve.
Size : 25.1 x 20.2 x 3.6 cm
Condition : Very good; there is an old split across three quarters of the length of the base, with the grain, which has been repaired and stablised; where the tesserae which make up the central mosaic have been disturbed, they have been reapplied in a rather haphazard manner, but although the detail of this feature is therefore compromised, the overall appearance of the piece is still very impressive
Restoration : old repair as above
Weight : 330 grams
Notes : There is some very fine work indeed on this tray, notably to the complex geometric designs to the canted sides, which feature some finely-grained pieces and a wide variety of different colours - this is typical of work by the Burrows family. However, the central mosaic pattern is not dissimilar to others utilised by Edmund Nye early in the process which was to lead on to the adoption of Berlin wool-work designs.
