Decoration : Mosaic image of a butterfly within keylines. Geometric marquetry border. Side panels decorated with a broad band of stickware diamonds
Size :  21.5×12.8×7.5cm
Condition : Extraordinary – for a piece this old to have no missing tesserae and remarkably little wear is testament to outstandig treatment by previous collectors. The interior has the orignal silk lining. which is a little frayed. particularly on the right hand side.
Restoration : The base has been felted – this is not original
Weight :  477 grams

A sumptuous example of early tessalated Tunbridge ware in remarkable condition – maker uncertain although quite possibly Edmund Nye. Nye is seen as the originator of butterflies / moths on Tunbridge ware although George Burrows was also known to be producing such wares at the time.
