Tunbridge Ware - Childs & Son Hexagonal Two Part Pin Cushion Box with Lidded Compartment c1855
Heading : Tunbridge Ware - Hexagonal Two Part Pin Cushion with Lidded Compartment
Date : c1855
Period : Victorian
Origin : Brighton; England
Decoration : A hexagonal box with a central, rectangular section with lift-off lid; this has a small Berlin wool-work design, edged with a simple geometric border, and a small turned handle; there is a ten-square geometric frieze around the six sides of the piece; there are two triangular pin cushions to either side of the central box
Size : 15.8 cm long x 9.7 cm wide x 4.2 cm deep
Condition : Good - the box is sound, but a little scruffy; the pin cushions are very worn, and the central lid is a little warped; it also appears to be a little undersized, but both pieces bear matching incised numerals - XVI - which would indicate that they are a proper match; this convention has been noted on other examples of the same box, from the same source.
Restoration : none - the pin cushions cannot be replaced without completely dismantling the box, which seemed to be a step too far...
Weight : 133 grams
Note : this pieces bears a label for Childs & Son, of Kings Road, Brighton; this was the earlier iteration of the father and son company, William Senior and Junior, who were in business from 1840 to 1873; William Senior initially worked on his own from 1832, was in partnership with his son throughout the 40's and 50's, and his William Jr carried on the name after the retirement of his father in the mid 1860's
