A Tunbridge Ware Pin Cushion and Reel or Silk Box with Floral Mosaics c1850
Heading : A Tunbridge Ware Pin Cushion and Reel or Silk Box with Floral Mosaics
Date : 1850
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells; this style seems to be solely attributed to the manufacturer Edmund Nye.
Decoration : A blue velvet pin cushion is set in to the hinged lid of a central well; the lid has chamfered edges bearing narrow geometric bands with the same repeating to the sides, although to a different pattern; inside the lidded well a triangular lift-out tray sits on the ledged sides; this also has chamfered edges, satinwood veneer and is lined with blue velvet; the well itself is lined with its original paper; to each side of this well there are two further rectangular wells, both with their blue velvet lining. The main rosewood body of the box has four chamfered edges, decorated with a broad floral band within banded keylines; the whole sits on four turned stickwood bun feet.
Condition : Excellent - very little loss of tesserae; the blue velvet lining is a little tired as you might expect - especially on the top of the cushion - and one piece does not fit to one edge of its well.
