Tunbridge Ware - Rectangular Box with Pin Cushion Lid c 1855

Heading : Tunbridge Ware - Rectangular Box with Pin Cushion Lid c 1855
Date : c1855
Period : Victorian
Origin : Tunbridge Wells; England

Decoration : Rectangular box; lid has a pin cushion on the top, with four canted, square edges decorated with a five-square geometric band and continuous key-line stringing; around the four edges of the body a seven-square geometric border with continuous and banded key-line stringing; internally lined with some extravagant red, black and gold paper - very possibly original
Size : 11.4 x 7.6 x 6.7 cm
Condition : good; tiles all in place; some minor bumps and shallow gouges to the external surface; the pin cushion is worn; good internally though the paper is a little stained in places; no key
Restoration : none
Weight :  170 grams

Notes : other boxes of this exact same type have been labelled for Edmund Nye, and Thomas Barton after him - it is very much from that lineage; perhaps slightly earlier than other examples we have seen due to the configuration of the banding around the body
