Origin : Tonbridge, Kent ( spelled Tunbridge prior to 1870)

Decoration : Central floral mosaic within keylines, van dyke triangles to the border. The side panels of the cover are decorated with geometric mosaics. The side panels of the body ared decorated with a floral berlin-woolwork mosaic within keylines. Stickware escutcheon. Paper label to base reads: “FROM G WISE JUN. MANUFACTURER, TUNBRIDGE”

Size : 25.2x11cm, 7.9cm height

Condition : Excellent, no missing tesserae, minimal wear and lifting. A small amount of rubbing to the cover.

Weight :  385 grams

Wise Jr took over the family business in 1869. He was, however, trading on his own from 1862 labelling the pieces G Wise Jr. This piece therefore dates from the period where George Jr was trading alone. He obtained timber from the building site of Tonbridge School as the old 16th century building was demolished to make way for the far larger neo-gothic sructure that stands there today.
