Although untitled the enamelled detail on the cover of this powder box unquestionably features the legendary Ballet Russe principal male dancer Vaslav Nijinsky

Shown here in the role of the ‘Golden Slave’  attired in a version of the exotic costume worn in the Ballet ‘Scheherazade’ . based upon the Middle Eastern book of tales ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ .choreographed by Michel Fokine to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov and premiered in Paris in 1911.

The Ballet Russe was a Ballet company formed in Paris by the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev and .although the company attracted a significant number of Russian performers. never actually performed in Russia before closing in 1929.

The Ballet Russe is regarded as the most influential ballet company of the entire 20th century bringing together the remarkable talents of both composers. choreographers and artists

Such composers include Claude Debussy. Erik Satie. Maurice Ravel. Richard Strauss and Sergei Prokofiev. The roll call of artists embrace Henri Matisse. Pablo Picasso . Alexandre Benois.and Wassily Kandinsky whilst Leon Bakst and Coco Chanel are regarded as  both highly influential and progressive costume designers of their time.

Born in 1889 in Kiev to Polish parents Vaslav Nijinsky attended the Imperial Ballet School in St Petersburg at the tender age of eight before graduating to the Imperial Ballet Company in 1907. He eventually retired in 1919  and .following three decades of mental health issues. died in London in 1950.
