This sizeable pair of vases display complex marmoreal internal decoration using red/russet. cream and sang de boeuf splatter. The high quality gilding offers a mirror image design of Art Nouveau Poppy and Marguerite flowers enameled and gilt in higher relief than the sinuous stems and foliage. the reverse featuring a solitary small cloud.
The standard of gilding is suggestive of the work of Jules Barbe. He and his family alongside twenty six other craftsmen having arrived in Stourbridge. England in 1879. following the death of his wife during the siege of Paris in the midst of the Franco-Prussian war. Once here he found employment at the Dennis glassworks prior to working exclusively for Thomas Webb until 1901 when he became a freelance decorator. However the only certainty regarding our pair of vases is that their scale would have demanded the efforts of the most senior of the talented gilders available as they so aptly demonstrate.
