This interwar period piece represents a change in style as René Lalique made the transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. This design has elements of both with the all over mistletoe design maintaining the naturalistic style of the Art Nouveau.
Eric Knowles Comment
Lalique uses mistletoe in several designs to great effect especially when increasing in scale to his more monumental Grande Boulle de Gui albeit the design is relatively sparse when compared to the present vase. The use of mistletoe and other greenery in grand halls at Christmas follows on from pre-christian pagan times as is the the actual timing of the mid-winter festival on the 25th December.
