Description
An appealing Edwardian crackle glass vase in apple green which has a sterling silver top fully hallmarked.
The technique for producing ice or crackle glass had been known since 16th century Venetian glass blowers first plunged molten glass into cold water. the outers layers becoming crazed due to internal heat stresses. The glass was subsequently reheated and formed. It is said that the technique to make crackle glass was a closely guarded secret until “rediscovered” by the English glassmaker Apsley Pellatt in the mid 19th century and marketed “anglo-venetian crackle glass”
Stevens and Williams were the major proponents of the technique in England and later Royal Brierley. The apple green colour was achieved via the addition of both iron oxides and chromium to the molten glass and it was a popular colour for decorative pieces during the early 20th century. The silver rim is hallmarked for London 1903.
Measures 7 ½ inches tall with a 1 ½ inch rim and 2 ½ inch base.
No chips cracks or restoration to the glass. the rim has a small ding or two as shown. but it does not detratct from the aesthetic quality.
An outstanding example.
