Thes seemingly elaborate designs were originally made from the 14th century onwards. The ribs. prunts and thumb holes on such glasses were necessary anti-slip device at a time when food was eated with fingers.

Ehrenfeld glass from Cologne were masters of producing glass in Roman. early Venetian styles and central European styles. The museum of applied arts in Cologne has the benchmark collection. Snapped pontil. pucella marks ( fold lines) in the bowl. folded foot. applied trailing …this is a hommage to a Saxon or Germanic drinking cup but it is very decorative and very different.

Glass artist Josef Flek in the Czech Republic has continued with production of replicas of historic glasswares.
