We are putting this into auction on eBay in the hope that some of the differences between this and 18th century English examples may be highlighted.
1. Look at the direction of of the twist in the stem. It runs in a clockwise direction up the stem.
2. Look at the “conical foot” with the flat base.
3. There are no pucella marks in the bowl ( vertical “fold lines”)
4. The foot has been “spun” into a mould. it is not blown
5. There are no tooling marks on the foot
6. There is no soot in the glass no “slag seeds” or “stones”
7. The bell shaped bowl is too narrow before it starts to flare
8. The bowl is too deep
Not all of these will be immediately obvious from the images. Do ask a seller to confirm all of the above. most will simply not know that they are making erroneous assumptions. There seems to a flawed assumption that every opaque twist wine glass if 18th century. They were still being made in Stourbridge in the 1950s.
