Additional Information
The base retains part of the original Galle paper label. Nancy and Paris and another but complete label for Forterre the Strasbourg Porcelain and Glass retailer. These are often presented as vases but it is a lamp base. the vertical above the signature is sparsely decorated and the cable would be trailed in this alignment.
With the Galle cameo shade this would retail for in excess of £8.000.
Although electricity was available to the Parisian elite in the 1890s it was not until after the first world war that it became commercially viable to produce glassware for lamps. I know that all the major auction houses claim that these were made before 1905. but they are wrong. The great French glass makers were masters of their art. but they were also good business people. Any date attributed before 1918-19 fails the ‘common sense test’.
