This letter from William Eustis, Secretary of War, to an unknown General is informing him of the surrender of Detroit by General Hull. Dated just 12 days after the capitulation, it gives a fascinating insight into how the war was going and also the movements of the President.
A true piece of American history written by a man who was part of President James Madison's inner circle. The surrender by William Hull to a numerically vastly inferior combined British and Indian force was the result of a bluff letter being deliberately allowed to fall into American hands....
Friday Eveng 28th August
My dear General,
The information that Genl Hull has capitulated with the enemy for his post and his troops comes from so many sources as to leave little or no hope that it is not true. There is no official account from him his last letter is on the 4th, all is dark and unaccountable. The articles of capitulation as they are reported to be are transmitted from various sources in Ohio. The President left the city this morning. I have sent an express which will overtake him this evening. The conquest of all Canada will not efface the impression of this disaster. The Western country is in the greatest alarm and filled with resentments against the General expressed in the strongest & harshest terms. You will have received the enemy's triumphant account before this reaches you. The consequences of every kind will rush on your mind not so powerfully I hope as they have on mine. On the return of the Presdt your Letter of the 22nd will be answered. Arrangements had been made to send Colo Wadsworth to you. Boyd is a Brigdr & will report to you. Wm Jarvis is DY comfy & will also report to you. Send him a line, lest my Letter to him should be delayed take him. All your requests will be complied with as far as possible.
It is late. Fatigued & appraised. I am yr
