Additional Information : Detailed map of 17th century Kent which – when drawn – included areas that are now included in London. such as Greenwich. The keen-eyed will note that Tunbridge Wells is not on the map at all; the area it now occupies was part of the parish of Spellhurst (now Speldhurst). and the creation of the map predated the discovery of the chalybeate spring which was to lead to the development of the town. Other matters of interest are the archaic spelling of Tonbridge (Tunbridge) and Sevenoaks (Seuenoke). The village of Ightham. long considered the finest in Kent. is rendered “Ightain” and the lowly village of Plaxtol failed to draw the attention of the topographer.
