Heading : WMF Lidded Brass and Wood Cigar Box made for Eisenacher Motorenwerk
Date : The box 1900-1910. the logo was applied after 1928
Origin : Geislingen an der Steige. Germany
Decoration : Brass-wrapped wooden box (probably cedar); fully covered externally other than base. including a wooden insert affixed to the inside of the lid; this insert is in turn decorated with an enamelled metal badge depicting the company’s logo; the brass over the four external sides is lightly hammered; the top of the (non-hammered) lid is embossed with a vintage racing car (53 x 108mm). and engraved with EISENACHER MOTORENWERK; the box stands of four small round feet which raise it 6mm above a flat surface; the WMF ostrich mark in lozenge is stamped to the turned edge of a side panel. under the base. along with the number 75

Condition : Very good; minor. very thin scratches externally with insignificant bumps and bruises entirely commensurate with age and use; the wooden and enamelled components are in excellent condition

Noted : Eisenacher Motorenwerk was an iteration of the ‘VEB Automobile Work Eisenach’ company which operated from its base in central Germany for almost 100 years from 1896. when it was founded by the father and son partnership of Heinrich and Gustave Ehrhardt. Having initially supplied the Prussian military. production quickly expanded to include bicycle and early ‘Wartburg’ motor vehicles. An enduring association with BMW which began in the late 1920’s culminated in an EMW produced car taking part in the 1953 German Grand Prix at the storied Nurburgring. with driver Edgar Barth piloting his EMWR1 through twelve laps (of eighteen) before exhaust problems forced his withdrawal.
