We found over forty ships named Nelson in the Lloyds register from 1856 to 1885 alone. Of these sixteen were barques. The last to be built that we could find was assembled in 1879 in Sunderland. Naming your ship after one of the greatest Britons to ever walk the earth is entirely understandable.
This is a footed tumbler in the strictest sense although nowadays Tumbler and Beaker are synonymous. A tumbler has a convex base and would tumble over…without the foot. The walls are far too thin to be a tea mixing bowl and there are no internal scratches as would be the case had it been used for this purpose.
This form has been produced since the first or second century as a drinking vessel. This is only our third example and is the property of a Gentleman collector from Derbyshire.
