A charming and fascinating piece of folk art and social history. this naively carved horn beaker is a real rarity. The front is carved with a dedication and various symbols including a wheat sheaf. lyre and farm tools. The reverse depicts a doveabove the hands of friendship clasped in greeting. The word ‘love’ is replaced by two hearts and the name ‘Harper’ is depicted using the image of a harp.
The inscription reads :
“HEAR IS TO EARL TALBOT WITH ALL LOVE J HARPER”
This will refer to John Chetwynd-Talbot. the first Earl Talbot of Hensol . Glamorgan. or his son Charles the second Earl.
