Art Deco Bronzes
The William Van Alen designed Chrysler building epitomises Art Deco style for some and the Rockefeller Center for others. The pronounced geometric forms of Art Deco archirecture is one way to describe the period, the decorative arts and interior design are two other related dimensions.
The impact of the Art Deco period scluptors Bruno Zach, Josef Lorenzl, Demetre Chiparus and Ferdinand Preis was just as towering when expressed in bronze and ivory as anything constructed in steel, glass and concrete. Whereas the design of iconic buildings in the United States was influenced by the desire for both beauty and utility the latter was not a design requirement for the visual arts and Art Deco bronzes.
