Description
Heading : 17th Century Facon de Venise wine glass c1665
Period : William III of Orange
Origin : Netherlands
Colour : Slightly pink hue to bowl and foot with clear stem
Bowl : Conical
Stem : Bladed collar above a very short capstan with a hollow-blown quatrefoil knop above another blade knop and half knop cushion.
Foot : Low conical
Pontil : Snapped
Glass Type : Lead
Size : 14cm height, 8.6cm bowl, 7.7cm diameter foot
Condition : Excellent, no chips or cracks, but the bowl and foot are finely crizzled. There is a slight (typical) variation in the width of the fold to the foot which does not affect foot dimensions.
Restoration : None
Weight: 73 grams
The bowl and foot have numerous small bubbles and some impurities commensurate with date of manufacture. The bowl and foot have clear tooling marks. The pink tint no doubt results from the use of manganese in the flux but its use as a colouring agent would appear to be deliberate since the stem is of clear glass. For a similar type, see Bickerton p. 52, illustration 13.
