Description
An excellent Georgian Glass Tazza c1760 with an 8 sided twisted inverted baluster pedestal stem with a large air tear. It has a single ring shoulder collar and a double ring at the base of the stem. It has a double rim with a domed and folded foot.
Barrington Haynes dates these Tazzas with silesian stems to 1715 to 1765. The vast majority of tazzas that we have seen have this stem type. some six sided examples . rarely ones with four and an overwhelming majority with eight sides and some with sixteen. Of all stem types found on tazzas. bobbin stems. plain stems. air twist and so on eight sided moulded stems still predominate. The reasons for this may be that this was simply the optimal stem form and probably that they were made for much longer than Mr Haynes states. Pedestal stem wine glasses account for fewer that one in twenty surviving drinking glasses. but the overwhelming majority of tazzas.
The shoulders on the stem are errect and upright a feature that tends to diminish with later examples as some slope downwards and ideed the shoulders disappear completely on some examples. We are also of the opinion that the number of collars tends to be higher for later examples. this is certainly our experience. Despite Haynes dating similar examples to 1740 we believe that on the balance of probabilities this is some 20 years later. We will gladly be corrected.
English lead. no chips cracks or restoration. it measures 4 1.4 inches tall with a 8 ¼ inch plate and 3 ¾ inch foot.
