Commercial whaling in Britain came to an end in 1963. Remarkably the highest prices for whale oil were achieved not in the mid 19th century prior to the ready availability of kerosene but in the 1950s. Whale oil continued to be used in hydraulics and transmission systems in the early 1970s.
