Description

Heading : Early 19th century grog box 
Date : c1810-1830
Period :  George III-George IV
Origin : The box is English. the bottles are probably French or Low Counrties
Glass Type : Lead-free  
Size : 25cm height. 37.5cm width. 24.5cm depth.
Condition :Very good no chips or cracks to glass other than a crack in the funnel. Box is also in excellent condition.
Restoration : The box has been fully retsored. waxed and polished it was in very poor state. We have left the interior velvet lining in original condition. All the bottles have been professionally cleaned internally. The gilding on two of the bottles was a little worn and this has been retouched
Weight : 8475 grams

There are six quart decanters which are 23cm tall. Two drinking glasses with a central blade knop stem which are 10.5cm tall and two tumblers at 9cm tall. There is also a 10cm long decanter funnel. There are six more pint decanters which are 14.5 cm tall below the tray containing the drinking glasses. All the glass has gilded neoclassical decoration. The box itself is in excellent condition made from oak with a red velvet lining. the handles and all hinges are fully functioning and stable. 

These are frequently referred to as “campaign bottle boxes”. We are certain that some will have been taken overseas by the gentleman soldier and naval officer. However. we can only find written evidence for them being used whe travelling by carriage. Having a few drinks during long journeys must have eased the tedium.
