Heading : An early 19th century engraved glass jug
Date : 1820-1840. Possibly a little earlier
Period : George III – Victoria
Origin : England
Colour : Clear. excellent grey hue
Body : Ovoid body. Top down applied handle domed on outer flat on inside with ribbon finish lower terminal. Monogram JW
Base : Applied disc foot with snapped pontil
Glass Type : Lead.
Size : Height 20.5cms to top of handle
Condition : Exemplary. A few small particle of clinker within the glass
Restoration : None
Weight : 1029 grams
This may be a little earlier than stated. however the handle would be less domed on the outer surface and the lower attachment would have a more elaborate finish if this were late 18th century. Early examples are often referred to as “decanter jugs”. Wine and beer was decanted from a barrel to a decanter jug.
There are a few heritage pubs in Britain where beer is still served directly from the barrel and fewer still using wooden barrels that do impart the most wonderful flavour to malty beers.
