This is a legacy from the days when shaving foam had to be produced from soap and water and razors were cut throat and not the over engineered safety devices with increasingly costly blades that are blunt within minutes.
One of our colleagues reverted to using a cut throat and sharpening strap many years ago and claims it was the best investment he ever made.
