Description
A Georgian Irish Serving Bowl and Original Plate c1790.
Typical heavy lead dark grey colour. both pieces are in truly excellent condition. They are not perfect with a few very minor nibbles but you have to look very hard and when compared to most similar pieces we have had over the years this pairing is in iincredible condition. Similar “eared” bowls in well documented services are widely believed to have been used as either ice pails or for serving chilled desserts. We do not subscribe to the ice pail theorem as many waisted bowls with handles . akin to modern designs are known.
The cutting features fileds of large flat cut diamonds a feature of late 18th century Irish tablewares. together with fans and an intricate pointed scalloped rim. The cut geometric floral design on the bases is identical to that of marked pieces with silver hallmarks held by the V and A and attributed to Williams and Co Dublin 1787 and to several other examples held in the Museum of Ireland. Later Irish table wares invariably feature prismatic and fields of strawberry cut diamonds . usually associated with Waterford. pillar flutes and fine diamonds. fan cut rims and so on. This is not so exuberant as those antique Irish glass pieces from the early 19th century.
It bowl measures 4 ½ inches tall 8 inches long and 5 ½ inches wide. The plate is 10 ½ inches long and 7 ½ inches wide.
