Wine glass coolers were a the creation of late 18th century invention combined with necessity. Finger bowls had been used for many years. However with meals becoming ever more elaborate affairs wine glasses were at a premium. Wine glasses were still costly and the dining table space required for five. six and more wine glasses became an issue when the number of dishes served for just lunch increased from but a handful to thirty and more for the Prince Regent.
Wine glasses needed to be rinsed at the table and for some wines cooled. Rinsers were either single or double lipped. The wine glass would be turned upside down and the stem held in the lip. The rinsers would be partially filled with ice and water.
