Description

This superb goblet from Saxony in the east of modern day Germany that shares some cutting features with neighbouring Bohemian glass from the same period. There are numerous museum example sand all are attributed to the Glücksburger Hütte from 1710 to 1730. This glass house may present a lesson to all of us in terms of resource management. It was originally sited due to the availability of large quantities of timber for charcoal production but by 1751 it has to be closed due  to shortages of timber. An Anglo- Prussian army finally laid it to rest when sacking the factory during the seven years war of 1754.

The cutting and polishing is exquisite and we hope that the photographs do this justice. The thistle bowl has a cut and polished stylised flowers and printie cuts. The base of the bowl is solid and contains and air tear and is also facet cut. The shoulder and hollow inverted baluster knop are also facet cut. It has a huge conical folded foot with snapped pontil.

The glass is 8 1/8th inches tall with a 3 1/2 inch bowl and a 4 9/16ths folded foot. There is a small burst air bubble in the bowl. it measures 1/8th inches wide and 3/16ths long and has been in situ since manufacture. No chips. cracks or restoration. it has excellent smokey amethyst colour resulting from the addition of manganese to the glass.
