Description
These type of continental glasses have always been referred to as “Absinthe” glasses in the UK. They have the following common features. Firstly a bowl that becomes deceptive in the lower section. Secondly they are always tall and made from thicker glass than anticipated. Thirdly the bowls are always tall funnels and finally they frequently have an engraved measure mark on the glass. In this case the measure line indicated on the glass is exactly 2 fluid ounces. This is consistent with the system of “Measures usuelles” in post-revolutionary France used up to 1840. yes the French also use “Pints” which demonstrates a great deal of common sense. We have read that the reason for these glasses being thicker walled is that ice and water would be added and the thicker glass acted as an insulator. I have two of these glasses myself and can confirm that they work very well for Pastis in the summer sunshine.
The glass has a thick walled funnel bowl on a capstan stem and plain foot with a polished pontil. It stands 8 inches tall with a 3 1/8th bowl and a 3 1/8th inch foot. No chips. cracks or restoration.
