Description
A superb German or most probably Bohemian glass goblet c1730. Cutting and engraving of glass had been practised in Bohemia from the 16th century. they were the undisputed masters of the craft.
The glass has a large round funnel bowl with hexagonal scalloped cutting that has the appearance of honeycomb. The stem is complex with an annulated collar above a facet cut hollows inverted baluster knop. a further swelling knop with a double annulated knop and a small cushion at the base of the stem. Conical foot snapped pontil. The bowl is very similar to other documented pieces attributed to Potsdam. the cushion and collar are typically Bohemian. We had a very similar though taller glass recently.
The glass has a manganese hue. this is the result of “doping” the glass to remove the green hues associated with soda glass and to darken the metal. No chips or cracks or restoration. there is some clouding in the hollow knop a possible result of some moisture being trapped in the knop when fabricated. The glass stands 7 3/4 inches tall with a 3 5/16ths inch bowl and 4 inch foot.
