Description
Heading : An uncommon double series mercury air twist wine glass
Period : George II
Date : c1750
Origin : England
Colour : Clear with silver-mercury coloured threads
Bowl : Waisted bell
Stem : A pair of “mercury” tapes outside a multi-ply mercury column
Foot : Conical
Pontil : Snapped
Glass Type : Lead
Size : 16.1cms. bowl 6cms. foot 7cms Weight: 125g
Condition : Restored. see below
Restoration : When we purchased this glass the rim of the foot had multiple small chips that we often refer to as “fritting”. This was taken to Basil Loveridge glass restoration and for the the sum of £35 this has been polished. Before this was undertaken the diameter of the foot was 7.2 cms. Artificial wear has then been applied to the foot rim.
This is standard practice in the “trade”. It is very difficult to detect and for those with less integrity all too easy to ignore or to describe as a “minor polish” and to focus on the foot diameter being larger that the bowl. Polishing is boolean. it has it been polished or not. If so then by how much. We hope others follow our lead with this more quantitative approach.
The murcury-silver appearance is achieved by creating ovoid threads of air within the glass. The shape of the thread means that more light will refract internally within the thread. No silver of mercury was used to achieve this.
