Description
This is an exceptionally fine and rare Cyder Glass which dates to c1755
It has a conical bowl beautifully engraved with apples with the word ‘CYDER’ engraved about the rim. It has a double merese at the base of the bowl and sits on a single series air twist stem above a conical foot with snapped pontil.
English lead. it measures 6 7/8 inches tall with a 2 ½ inch bowl and 2 7/8 inch foot.
No chips cracks or restoration.
So why ‘CYDER’ rather than ‘CIDER’.
We have been advised that Cyder is made from a single pressing of apples. a single varietal. However Cider is fermented from a blend of apples. This may have some basis in truth. The proven fact is that Cyder is an English spelling variant that has been in use since the middle ages. the bard himself used both variants and although there may have been a difference they have been synonyms for 600 years.
Cider. the drink almost given to agricultural labourers well into living memory. was made from the cyder pulp being re-pressed at the rate of 10 gallons of water to 1 cwt of pulp. This “long drink” was conspicuously different. not only in its alcoholic value. but also its taste.
