Description
A magnificent Georgian Mercury Twist Ratafia Glass c1750.
It has a long round funnel bowl with almost vertical sides and flute moulding to the base. It sits on a superb Mercury Twist (pair of Corkscrews) stem with a conical foot and snapped pontil.
English lead. it stands 8 13/16 inches tall with a 2 1/8 inch bowl and 3 1/8 inch foot.
No chips or cracks. As can be seen in the pictures the foot has had some restoration in the form of a silicon infill which is a highly professional and expensive technique which can be used on top of the range glass to remove chips. It’s an excellent job and difficult to spot.
This glass is by far the best Ratafia we have ever had and a very rare example. Ratafia glasses are rare things and to find a Mercury Twist example is excellent…to find an example almost 9 inches tall is exceptional.
You won’t find another example anywhere on the net…
A comparable glass with conical bowl was sold by Delomosne and Son Ltd in their 2006 sale “The Seton Veitch Collection. this example was 20.5 cm or 8 1/4 ins approx…price £3000
