We have little add to the description provided by Jim Peake at Bonhams other than to reinforce the argument that Dutch engraved balusters and light balusters were probably made in the Netherlands and perhaps not exported from Newcastle or elsewhere to be engraved within the provinces. We have subscribed to this theory for longer than most and with justification. lead glass is known to have been produced in Namur in Belgium during the 1760s and glass known to have been produced in Antwerp has been demonstarted to contain between 12 and twenty percent lead oxide.
This is one of the finest bobbin stems that we have had the pleasure of describing.
