This facet cut wine is earlier than anticipated and a fine expression of the glass cutters art. The round funnel bolw is entirely covered with concave scallop cuts. This decoration is bridged from the stem. This style was at it’s peak of popularity around 1760 as evidenced by multiple candlesticks and cruet sets with hallmarked silver tops.

The extensive cutting on the foot is indicative of this being a costly glass at the time of manufacture and again the similarities in the cutting pattern with facet cut stem candlesticks of the same period cannot be ignored. The broad polished pontil is another indicator of high quality. the polishing lines all running in one direction. this was not rotary polished.

The size of the glass is also indicative of an earlier date the bowl is more substantial and the glass alltogether more substantial than later examples the size of which were impacted by incremental increase in glass tax.
