A good argument could be made that the engraving has some Jacobite significance. It would be just as valid to argue that this is simply a decorative theme used at a time when ‘the cause’ was beyond forlorn it was simply finished. The Pretender had died going mad with a ‘lingering disease’ believed to syphilis and the young pretender had become a hopeless drunk. It Being deluded syphilitic drunkards was a not a qualification for monarchy. King George III in his later years was quite enough.
